| NOTES SUPPLIED BY OTHERS: | The 1939 Moller organ at Grace Lutheran Church (ELCA) was originally installed in the former Emanuel Lutheran Church on Broad Street. Emanuel merged with Grace in 1994 and the organ was moved to Grace Church. Even though there was some work done on the organ during the move it still needed additional work to make it reliable and to allow it to produce the good sound that is inherent in the instrument. The present organist, Norman Maunz, who has been there since shortly after the organ was installed, has done most of the repairs and maintenance since then. Although there are still a few very minor problems it is now in the best shape it has ever been in since the move to Grace. When the organ was at Emanuel it is surmised that the Swell shades were at the end of the rectangularly shaped chamber so that all of the pipes were in a direct line of sight to the opening. In 1994 Grace had just completed construction of a new sanctuary and had designed the organ chamber with the Swell shades on the side of the chamber instead of at the end. It is believed that this situation is restricting some of the sound of the organ from getting out since some of the pipes are now behind a wall. Plans are presently under way to install an additional set of shades along the side wall to compensate for this arrangement. (Norman Maunz) |
